“What can I say?” Neha peers over my shoulder at my phone. “The man has game.”

Our eyes meet in the mirror, and she must sense the distress in mine when she quickly changes gears. “Look, scratch everything I’ve just said. You still have options here, K. You’ll go out, have a nice meal, get to know the guy. If you’re not head over heels for him by dessert, cut your losses and bounce. No harm. No foul.”

This brings me in from the ledge. Releasing a slow breath, I turn to face her. “You’re right. I can do this. It’s dinner, not a mating ceremony.”

She winks at me. “You’re on fire by the way. If you both manage to keep it in your pants tonight, I’ll volunteer to drop you off at the convent together.”

She’s not lying. I’ve done the most with tonight’s look—tastefully so. My slinky purple dress stops midthigh, hanging off each shoulder and perfectly offsetting my rich brown complexion. Exfoliated to the gods and slathered in cocoa butter, I even went to the trouble of booking a last-minute wax appointment. Which is to say I bought a tub of that microwavable goo at a nearby Rite Aid and went to town on my pits and parts. For final touches, I slick on some hot pink lipstick and pop in a pair of gold dangling earrings. Then, I slip on a pair of strappy heels, grab my mini trench and my clutch, and head for the door.

By now, Neha’s sprawled on the sofa under a weighted blanket resting a bowl of buttery popcorn on her chest, gearing up to binge some TLC show on overpriced wedding dresses. For a hot second, the sharp urge to blow off this date, toss my heels, and stay in this safe haven we’ve created together almost wins.

She notices me idling at the door and calls out from her cocoon. “Don’t worry, whenever you get back, I’ll still be here with Randy and the bridezillas. Now go, go, don’t keep the man waiting!”

“I’m counting on it. Save me some red.” We air-five and I’m out the door.
